School History

Brookfield Elementary School opened on December 1, 1967. Our school was originally designed by architect Anthony Mussolino, who also designed Shrevewood Elementary School, and was built by the M. L. Whitlow construction company at a cost of $678,000. Dulles International Airport was only five years old when our school was constructed, and as planning for our school was underway aircraft flight patterns in and out of Dulles Airport were being changed by the Federal Aviation Administration. Acoustics engineers were called in to design special soundproofing for our building. These modifications included sealed windows, reduced window areas, acoustical shielding, masonry ceilings, and air conditioning–a rarity in public schools at that time–all of which added an additional $99,000 to construction costs.

On September 9, 1968, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) added kindergarten as a grade and some 8,000 kindergarteners enrolled in FCPS that year. The above photograph, from our second yearbook, shows the very first class of kindergarteners at Brookfield Elementary School. Brookfield celebrated its 50th anniversary in the 2017-2018 school year. Below is a photograph of our 1998 yearbook that was on display during our anniversary celebration.
