Welcome, Principal Hassen!
The Region 5 Leadership Team is pleased to announce that Ms. Lesley Hassen has been named the new principal of Brookfield Elementary School. Ms. Hassen has been with Fairfax County Public Schools since 2009 and has served in different administrative roles since 2014. She possesses a wealth of experience in educational leadership and a deep commitment to fostering an inclusive and collaborative school environment.
Ms. Hassen currently serves as an assistant principal at Little Run Elementary School. Since starting in this role in July 2023, she has led initiatives to implement positive behavior support systems, improve student attendance rates, organize school resources to enhance intervention and enrichment opportunities for students, and build structures for ongoing teacher professional development. Prior to her time at Little Run, Ms. Hassen held the role of assistant principal at Willow Springs Elementary School for four years from 2019-2023. Here, she led actions to initiate the Positivity Project for students and staff, led collaborative efforts to guide Tier 1 and 2 instructional supports for students in the rebound from the Covid pandemic, and spearheaded ongoing communication efforts between school and families.
Ms. Hassen holds a Master of Arts in Education – Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech, and a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Physical Education from George Mason University. Before entering school administration roles, she served as a physical education teacher at Parklawn Elementary School. She also served as a physical education teacher, department chair, and intern administrator at Carl Sandburg Middle School.
Through the years, Ms. Hassen has been recognized for her excellent accomplishments and impact. She earned the Outstanding Leader awards at Little Run, Willow Springs, and for the Fairfax High School pyramid.
Ms. Hassen is originally from Virginia Beach, VA, and moved to Northern VA after being recruited and offered a partial athletic scholarship to play Division 1 softball at George Mason University as the catcher for 4 years. Outside work, she loves spending time with her family and their two sweet dogs. Ms. Hassen resides close by in Centreville, where their family is also a part of the Cub Run ES community. When their family is not cheering their 8-year-old from the baseball field stands or on the sidelines of the basketball court, they find opportunities to make memories at the beach and beyond. Ms. Hassen and her family love venturing to the Outer Banks, where they drive their Jeep on the beach, catch waves on their bodyboards, watch their dogs run, enjoy the delicious food, and experience some of the same special memories she had growing up. She and her family are active in their community and are often found cheering on the Mason athletic teams or participating in alumni events. Family is important to Ms. Hassen, and she is thrilled to join the Brookfield Family and serve this wonderful community!
Please join us in welcoming Ms. Hansen to Brookfield Elementary School as our new principal. We look forward to working together to continue fostering a positive and thriving educational environment for all students.
