Forgiveness

Our Positivity Project trait this week is forgiveness. Forgiveness is when someone moves past feeling hurt and allows themselves to reconnect with the person who hurt them. Forgiveness is often seen as a selfless act, but it also carries benefits for those who practice it. Those who show forgiveness can move forward after someone has hurt them. People who can forgive realize that people make mistakes. By forgiving someone, you don’t have to say that what he/she did was okay. It means you have let go of the hurt that caused you and can move past it. In the online world, many people say things that they would not say to our faces.

Talk with your child about a time when they did something wrong, and you forgave them. Talk about how forgiveness makes you feel when you are the one who forgives versus the one who made a mistake. When asking your child to forgive, make sure you acknowledge their feelings of how they were hurt. Talk about how forgiveness means you understand that people make mistakes. In time, they will be more willing to forgive your mistakes.
